On January 28, 2008, President Bush signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 4986). Included in the Act are amendments to the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 ("FMLA") which provide additional leave benefits to eligible relatives of military servicemembers. The Act does not provide an effective date, thus the presumption is the amendments to the FMLA are to take effect immediately. Therefore, Employers should review and revise their FMLA policies and procedures as soon as possible.
